# Transport and warehousing.⏎ Who handles what?

How transport, third-party warehousing, cargo handling and commercial responsibilities
fit together in international B2B transactions.

## Transport terms belong in the commercial agreement

International trade is not finished when the price is agreed. The goods need to 
be collected, transported and delivered to the correct destination, possibly through
multiple service providers.

Before signing, discuss the loading address, available loading equipment, cargo 
specifications, delivery deadline and which party is responsible for organising 
and paying for freight.

## When is temporary warehousing useful?

Temporary storage can be valuable when goods arrive before the buyer is ready to
receive them, when several shipments must be combined or when imported goods need
to be divided among different customers.

The choice of facility depends on product type, dimensions, access requirements,
duration of storage and any specialised conditions such as temperature control or
food-grade handling.

## Storage, transloading and cross-docking are different

Warehousing involves keeping goods in an agreed storage facility for a period of
time. Transloading refers to transferring cargo between transport modes or units.
Cross-docking generally keeps storage time to a minimum before onward dispatch.

The most efficient choice depends on volumes, the available handling equipment, 
shipment schedules and the destination of the goods.

## Identify the actual logistics providers

A trading company may coordinate the process even though a separate freight forwarder,
carrier or warehouse operator performs the physical work. These businesses can be
contracted through different commercial arrangements.

Make sure the parties understand who issues invoices, who handles insurance, who
is responsible during loading and storage, and which terms and conditions govern
each service.

## Build a realistic logistics budget

An accurate cost picture may include pre-carriage, main freight, container handling,
unloading, inbound warehouse handling, storage days, outbound loading and final 
distribution.

Ask about delays, demurrage or other potential charges relevant to the shipment.
A clear breakdown makes it easier to compare proposals and avoid unexpected costs.
